Freestyle Libre Update - May 2019

What’s been happening in the campaign for wider access to the FreeStyle Libre glucose monitoring sensors? There hasn’t been a lot in the media but there is definitely a lot of work going into this campaign in the Diabetes Ireland office in recent months.

Diabetes Ireland listened to their members at their AGM last November, when asked for more to be done to widen the access to the HSE’s Freestyle Libre Reimbursement scheme. If you need a catch up or some background information to the #Libre4All in Ireland campaign click here.

In March, they circulated an online survey to gather as much information as possible from people using the Freestyle Libre and their experiences and as the HSE undertake their review of the data they collected, Diabetes Ireland will also submit the survey findings to that review process.

You may remember from correspondence between Mary Butler TD through a parliamentary question last November, that the HSE “agreed to review their decision to limit access of the Freestyle Libre to people under 21 years of age after 12 months. That 12 month period ended in April 2019 and the HSE will now need some time to undertake that review.” Diabetes Ireland announcement 13/5/2019

Now, I feel is the time for people power and to begin publishing some of the information from that survey and well as hearing from the people who use the Libre so that the decision makers within the HSE will take quality of life and patient safety into account when reviewing their date.
