There are two methods of monitoring blood glucose levels:

  • The finger stick method using blood glucose meters, as seen in the photo on the bottom left,

  • And continuous or flash glucose monitoring (CGM) using sensors attached to your body, as seen in the image on the bottom right. The links below will bring you to pages that provide a lot more detail on how these methods work and lots more.

Update 15/5/2024:

For Adults with Type 1 Diabetes: the 2024 version of the National Clinical Guidelines for Adults with Type 1 Diabetes states that all Adults with Type 1 should be offered a cgm.

For people with Type 2 Diabetes, the standard blood glucose monitoring system offered is the finger stick method.

Continuous & Flash Glucose Monitors

Continuous Glucose Monitors and Flash Glucose Monitors measure glucose using a sensor which is worn on the body that transmits a reading to a receiver device.

The most common method to check glucose levels is the finger-stick method using a blood glucose meter. This is also known as self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG).
