Diabetes & mental health are connected
University College Dublin. Authors: Jaroslav Gottfried, Sonya Deschênes, Siobhan Power.
All across Europe, diabetes is connected with depressive symptoms, and this connection does not change regardless of people‘s gender, age, physical activity, or smoking habits. In Ireland, people with diabetes reported that their mental health would benefit from peer support, emotional support from GPs, and empathetic understanding from other people.
Using CGM Data to Understand and Predict Blood Sugar Changes
Atlantic Technological University Sligo. Authors: Faizan Munawar, John Donovan, Etain Kiely, Konrad Mulrennan.
This work presents a data analysis framework that transforms continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data into time series suitable for advanced analysis. Using rolling windows to generate glycaemic variability time series, the framework enables the study of trends, seasonality, and their strengths, as well as forecasting. This approach opens new opportunities to examine long-term patterns in diabetes data and supports the development of more adaptive, data-driven management strategies.
Building a National Diabetes Registry for Ireland
National Diabetes Registry Team: Dervla Kennedy, Fiona Macnair, Angel George and Sean Dinneen,
To inform policy around diabetes care in Ireland it is essential to know how many people live with diabetes, what is happening to the population size and how outcomes compare with other health services. The National Diabetes Registry (NDR) team, established in 2025, will provide an overview of how they are approaching the task of establishing a registry including opportunities for people with lived experience of diabetes to get involved in the work.
The Diabetes Data Rights Charter
University College Dublin. Authors: Shane O’Donnell, Louise Hatherall, Hanne Ballhausen, Holly Hayes, Bryan Cleal and Muireann Quigley,
Data generated by diabetes devices are fundamental to the care and long-term health of people with diabetes. Yet, despite their centrality, users of these devices do not have full access to and control over the data their bodies generate. The aim of this project is to develop a Charter that asserts the data rights of people with diabetes (PwD).The Charter articulates principles that stakeholders should consider to enable PwD to exercise control over their diabetes data.
Lessons from Co-Designing Diabetes Research with Young Adults
University of Galway, D1 Now Young Adult Panel. D1 Now Young Adult Panel Mentors: Dr Aswathi Surendran, Dr Eimear Morrissey, Prof Molly Byrne, Prof Sean Dinneen,
This poster shares learning from creating young adult-friendly materials for a type 1 diabetes study in Ireland. It shows how young adults shaped recruitment, co-designed study materials, and guided website content to be clearer, more relatable, and more trustworthy. The work highlights practical, transferable lessons for organisations and researchers aiming to involve young adults in diabetes research.
