A few weeks ago Thriveabetes 2015 speaker, Kevin McMahon contacted me to let me know that Dr Stephen Ponder, author of “Sugar Surfing: How to Manage Type 1 Diabetes in the Modern World”, would be in Ireland in May and was interested in doing a workshop here.
Dr. Stephen Ponder is an endocrinologist and a certified diabetes educator (CDE) practicing in Texas, USA since 1989. He is also a person living well with type 1 diabetes for 51 years.
Kevin also put me in touch with Susan McGrath, who child has type 1 diabetes. Susan has, single handedly, organised a venue for our workshop.
And so, we have booked our venue, our speaker, Dr Stephen is organised and we are looking into a sponsor to help ease the burden of some of the cost.
Registration will open in March and is likely to cost €20/25 per person.
Who is Sugar Surfing for?
The Sugar Surfing workshop is open to anyone over the age of 18 who lives with type 1 diabetes. This includes parents & carers of children with diabetes and adults with insulin dependent diabetes.
This event would be most valuable to people with type 1 diabetes (parents and adults) who use a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) or the Freestyle Libre.
What is Sugar Surfing?
The Sugar Surfing method involves using current information from your CGM/Libre about where your blood sugar level is right now and where it's going, to prevent any highs or lows that might follow. Most diabetes education is based on changing insulin doses based on past events. But Sugar Surfing is about management in the moment, it’s forward looking not backwards looking. If you see a dramatic change in BG then you act on it.
The technology in Continuous Glucose Monitors(CGM) or the Freestyle Libre provides information about where blood sugar levels are right now and, more importantly, where they are going by displaying a directional arrow. By incorporating Sugar Surfing into type 1 diabetes management people can prevent high blood glucose or lows blood glucose levels that might follow and therefore improve their type 1 diabetes management and outcomes.
